Practical skills to:

  • Create a non-judgmental and accepting climate for the client.

  • Be flexible in the use of simple art materials.

  • Undertake an initial assessment of a client involving a social history, and to develop an ongoing assessment using information and observations gained through therapy sessions.

  • Make and record objective observations and professional reports.

  • Identify and use subjective responses to the client.

  • Develop appropriate treatment plans utilizing theoretical knowledge.

  • A range of techniques to facilitate verbal and non-verbal communication using simple art materials.

  • A professional identity that includes:
    • Professional ethics.
    • Awareness of professional obligations and limitations.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team (at agencies, schools, hospitals etc.) or independently in private practice.
    • Presenting case studies.
    • Ability to develop and rationalize a treatment plan using art therapy.

  • Clinical supervision
    • Received regularly.
    • Both individual and group supervision.
